Know your cycle – Day by Day
Days 1-5
  • From Day 1, if you are not conceived, your menstrual period begins and it continues till the 5th day of menstrual cycle by passing menstrual fluid through vagina. The fluid is discharged when the uterus sheds the blood vessels and the soft tissues from its inner lining. This leads to a low level of estrogen and progesterone, and the body temperature is of 96- 98°F. The muscle contraction of the uterine may induce abdominal cramps in many women with a blood loss of 10- 80 ml in these days.
Days 6-7
  • From Day 1, if you are not conceived, your menstrual period begins and it continues till the 5th day of the menstrual cycle bypassing menstrual fluid through the vagina. The fluid is discharged when the uterus sheds the blood vessels and the soft tissues from its inner lining. This leads to a low level of estrogen and progesterone, and the body temperature is 96- 98°F. The muscle contraction of the uterine may induce abdominal cramps in many women with a blood loss of 10- 80 ml in these days.
Day 8 (May extend to Day 12)
  • The increased level of estrogen secretion makes the uterus lining thicker. This promotes a richer blood supply and the follicles that surround the egg starts increasing its size, which all leads to the preparation of receiving the fertilized egg.
Day 10
  • This day; the mucus turns to wet with sticky/ cloudy/ whitish/ yellowish secretions.
Day 12
  • This period comes with more chances of getting pregnant with a high level of estrogen. The mucus turns so clear, slippery and stretchy as well that signals you that ovulation is near. The thickened lining of uterus signs that it is all set to house a fertilized egg. The sperm can survive in your body from even 2- 5 days after intercourse and for the same reason; if you have sex on the 12th day; there are more chances of getting pregnant.
Day 13
  • Here; a chain of processes is taking place inside your body through estrogen, LH and progesterone. The peak level of estrogen induces LH and in turn, LH stimulates progesterone synthesis that leads to the rise in FSH. Your body temperature can rise up to 4/10 and 8/10 degrees within 12 hours of ovulation. The temperature continues as high until your next menstrual period if you are not pregnant.
Day 14
  • As a result of the sharp fall in estrogen, the LH surges that induces the ovary to egg release. The egg can live almost 12 to 24 hours.
Day 15 (may extend to Day 24)
  • The egg moves through the fallopian tube and the empty egg follicle which is now called the corpus luteum starts secreting a better amount of estrogen and progesterone. This supports the uterus for a possible pregnancy. Also, the levels of FSH and LH begins to drop here.
Day 17
  • The corpus luteum keeps on producing progesterone and if your body temperature continues to stay high for the three days, that is a sign that your fertile period is over.
Day 18
  • The cervical mucus turns cloudy in this stage.
Days 21- 22
  • The level of progesterone rises to the peak.
Day 25
  • As the corpus luteum breaks apart, the progesterone levels start to fall. Along with that, your body temperature will also drop. If the progesterone level continues as high; then that signs about a positive pregnancy.
Day 27
  • Due to the lack of corpus luteum, the mucus becomes dry or it is absent.
Day 28
  • As a result of the regression of the corpus luteum, the level of estrogen continues to fall along with progesterone production. Hence, the mucus becomes thick. You will get your next period on the 29th day if you are not pregnant.
